Chiropractors Can Relieve Your Sciatica Pain

Chiropractors are known to be extremely effective at relieving sciatica pain. In my practice, I treat at least a hundred patients plus for sciatica every year. Sciatica is a common problem that can affect anyone of any age or fitness level. For some patients the pain can be so intense it hinders sleeping, walking, sitting, and standing, taking over their everyday life. As a chiropractor, I am able to relieve sciatica pain and correct the underlying cause usually within a few visits, depending on the severity of the patient’s condition.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition that causes pain in the lower back and leg. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. The nerve begins at the lower spine and runs down through both legs to eventually reach each foot. When the nerve becomes compressed pain, weakness, numbness, or a burning sensation may be felt anywhere along its path in the back, buttocks, and one or both legs.
The Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is typically due to misalignment and inflammation. The risk of developing sciatica increases in those who spend prolonged periods sitting, and with age and obesity. Lack of exercise and poor posture can also increase the risk of developing sciatica.
Common causes of sciatica are:
- Injuries to the spine
- Bone spurs
- Subluxation (misalignment of the spine)
- Herniated discs
- Narrowing of the spine
- Pregnancy
- Obesity
Chiropractic Treatment to Relieve Sciatica
After a thorough physical examination, lifestyle assessment and a review of your medical history your chiropractic will recommend a treatment plan that may include chiropractic adjustment, chiropractic massage therapy, spinal decompression, corrective exercises, lifestyle changes, or hot and cold therapies.
Typically, in my practice, I use the Thompson Drop Table technique to treat my patients with Sciatica as it is a gentler chiropractic adjustment method. This technique eliminates causing further irritation to the patient’s sciatica condition that may result from more forceful chiropractic techniques. With the Thompson Drop table technique, I am able to adjust the patient’s pelvis, sacrum, and lumbar spine gently and with minimal movement which in my opinion is a better way to treat the patient’s already suffering from acute pain.
In addition to the chiropractic adjustment, I also utilize Cold Laser Therapy to reduce any inflammation in the patient’s lower back region to further promote healing and provide even more pain relief.
Once the immediate pain has been relieved a preventive adjustment plan, corrective exercises, and a personalized nutrition plan to help prevent spinal misalignments, nerve compression, physical stress factors, and inflammation will be recommended to help the patient avoid future recurrence of the sciatica pain.
