Neurofeedback Treatment for Neurological Disorders: What is it and How Does it Work?

What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a biofeedback technique that uses real-time displays of brain activity to visually display how the brain is functioning. It has been used for decades in clinical settings, but it has only recently become more widely available to the public, especially through alternative medicine practices, such as chiropractors and wellness centers.
Neurofeedback therapy is used for many different purposes, including as an alternative treatment for neurological disorders such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, traumatic brain injury, and many other conditions.
How Neurofeedback Therapy Works to Treat Neurological Disorders
Neurofeedback therapy helps us to recognize irregular brainwave patterns and use that information to train our brains to work better.
To start, a trained neurofeedback technician performs a QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) while the patient is wearing an electroencephalography (EEG) headset. This is a diagnostic tool to measure electrical signals as brainwave patterns and provides a baseline analysis. During future training sessions, the patient is connected using only two small sensors. The EEG headset and sensors are not uncomfortable or painful, most of my pediatric patients find it pretty cool, like something out of a sci-fi movie.
There are many different technology systems that can be used to provide neurofeedback therapy. In my office, I’ve chosen to use the BrainCore Neurofeedback system. It’s a reliable and proven system that has the added benefit of engaging patients in a way that is a bit more fun and relaxing.
BrainCore Neurofeedback helps the patient to retrain their brainwave patterns by providing feedback in the forms of movies, puzzles, and games. The more regulated the brainwave patterns the further the activity advances. Engaging in any therapeutic treatment while happy and relaxed is only going to enhance the benefits and lead to greater results.
The goal of neurofeedback is to help the patient learn how to self-regulate their brainwaves into a new pattern or frequency, which then helps relieve the symptoms of their condition.
What are the Benefits of Neurofeedback Treatment for Neurological Disorders?
The benefits of neurofeedback are numerous, with patients being able to control their symptoms more effectively than before.
Neurofeedback can be used for many different purposes, including:
- Improving attention and focus
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Improving sleep quality
- Improving mood
- Increasing calm and mindfulness
- Improving memory
One of the main benefits of neurofeedback is that it is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment. Pharmaceuticals often have side effects that create new problems while trying to treat the initial symptom. Neurofeedback is not shown to have side effects.
Pharmaceutical solutions also only work with continued usage and maintaining the correct dose. Neurofeedback relies on our brain’s ability to adapt and expand. When you have learned how to recognize and control your brainwave patterns to relieve your symptoms only the results and success stay with you for life.
As more people seek holistic treatment options for themselves and their children, the effectiveness of neurofeedback therapy is becoming more widely known and embraced.
